I just got back last night from a small trip. First I went to Sled Island, which is a fantasic indie music festival in Calgary. I got to see some of my favourites like: Okkervil River (TWICE), Tegan and Sara, Of Montreal and Broken Social Scene. Plus I got to see a bunch of amazing bands ive never heard before like Mother Mother and The Wet Secrets.
I made friends with this one chick names Christine, she looks SO much like Bryndis. It was weird. I also made friends with this wonderfully strange guy named Frank who plays sax for this wicked band called Still’ Flyin. After the shows on Sat and Sun night we ended up all over downtown Calgary just talking and walking until the sun started to come up.
On Saturday night / Sunday morning (4am), Frank and I were looking for ANYTHING that was open so we could just get some water or juice or tea or something. So we walk past this place and it has a bunch of crazy drunk people outside sitting around on these huge things of hay. It looked interesting, so we went in. It was the most surreal experience ever. We get in there and everyone is wearing cowboy hats and the place has hay everywhere! BUT its a asian food restaurant and all the staff is asian and all the decor (other than the cowboy stuff) is asian. AND the only light in the whole place is coming from this huge-ass disco ball that was hanging from the ceiling. AND really cheesy late 80s early 90s music is blasting so loud I cant hear a single thing Frank says. When our waiter comes to take our order he is this tiny little asian guy and hes singing along to ‘Groove Is in The Heart’. It was just so unreal, I ended up ordering some kind of vegtable fried rice because apparently at ‘Singapore Sams’ you cant just order a pot of tea…
After the festival I took the greyhound to Vancouver. The plan was to search the internet/ newspapers for housing for August, but as soon as i got there, I recieved an email from Diandra which refered me to a friend of hers who needed roommates. The place is perfect, rent is cheap, the roommates are AMAZING (and crafty!), its located SO close to EC, and the house is going to be FULL of pets. Im so excited! and so relieved!
